The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the largest in the tournament’s history, and the first to expand to 48 teams, up from 32. Co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, it runs from June 11 to July 19, 2026, spanning 104 matches across 16 host cities. It opens with Mexico facing South Africa at the historic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City and closes five weeks later with the final at MetLife Stadium in the New York/New Jersey area.

The tournament begins with the group stage, where the 48 teams are split into 12 groups of four. Every team plays three matches, one against each of the other teams in its group. These opening games set the table for everything that follows: they establish form, reveal which contenders are clicking and which are stumbling, and determine who carries momentum into the elimination rounds. Because the margins are often thin, a single result here can reshape a team’s entire path.

Once the group games are complete, the field narrows to 32. The top two finishers from each group advance automatically, joined by the eight best third-placed teams, and together they enter a newly added Round of 32, the first knockout stage in this expanded format. From there, the tournament becomes single elimination: Round of 32 to Round of 16, then the Quarterfinals, the Semifinals, and finally the Final. There is no second chance. A knockout match that is level after 90 minutes goes to extra time, and if the score is still tied, it is decided by a penalty shootout.
